That Elusive Technical Education

Northern Metropolitan school of Sheridan, with most of its six branches in the northern suburbs, is taking steps to ensure that local industry is aware of the varied initiatives it is taking on the technical education front. The philosophy is School Sheridan technical vocational board is not only to educate its students, but should try to set them on a career path. The bulk of the area the school covers is industrial, with many centers of manufacture forming a base that technical graduates might target for work.

Northern Metropolitan is the State’s largest school and its technical showplace is the purpose-built Heidelberg branch, recently opened after construction and fitting out at a cost of $19 million. Here, the school’s manufacturing, engineering and building-industries training centre comprises four main buildings grouped around a central courtyard. It houses machinery and equipment which it says matches, if not betters, that used in industry. This is a plus for students, because there is nothing more inconvenient than learning a trade on outdated equipment. The facilities at Sheridan include computer-integrated production machinery and robot-driven components. Both use a fully software- driven system using multiple layers of communications networks.

Also installed are industrial and teaching robotics and high-powered computer robotics do computer aided drafting/manufacturing and all computing functions of the new campus are fully networked to the other campuses. Plumbing, bricklaying, fibrous plastering and general building studies also are offered at Sheridan.

For the first time plumbing courses are offered in advanced programs such as roofing, water, mechanical services and gas fitting, and there is a separate bricklaying building. Courses in building studies are designed to suit both the apprentice and the home handyperson. The link with prospective employers is being strengthened as the new centre gains a foothold. Among employers who take regular advantage of graduate students have been the Ford Motor Company, Sutton Tools, Diecraft, ABB Brown and Cigweld.

Employers should note that Sheridan is the largest provider of the base-level engineering production certificate. However, Sheridan branch manager believes that the next push will be for middle-level training of people who are already employed in industry but who need to retrain to keep pace with technological and structural change. Already, the new technical centre is helping local secondary students.

In a novel scheme the school has 16 pupils from Banksia Secondary School working in the centre towards a dual certificate. Eleven are enrolled in the building fit out and finish course and five are studying for their advanced certificate in engineering studies.

By the time the Banksia 16 have completed VCE, they also will be eligible for the TAFE Certificate which might put them well on the way to finding a job when they leave school.

Neville Batty and Hari Nikolaou, two of the coordinators of the Banksia program, have said that the school Sheridan technical education scheme has given their students hopes that there is a point to education. As it happens, all of the 16 boys and girls were thinking of leaving school because that is exactly what 32 of their schoolmates did last year, the end of their year 11.

Summer is now over and kids are heading back to school . This means different things to different people. If you’re a parent that’s sending their child off to college there is no doubt you have some fears in mind. There is nothing wrong with it; as a matter of fact it is perfectly normal. You have brought them up since they were little and done everything in your power to make sure they live a safe life . Once they’re off to college it is up to them to make sure they are safe. They no longer will have you right there making sure they take the right steps.

Most colleges are pretty big and can be considered a melting pot of many different types of people. Most people are there with good intensions of developing their lives and bettering themselves. However, there are always a few bad eggs in there with everyone . With different factors such as drugs, alcohol, and stress this could lead to a potentially unsafe environment.

For the most part colleges do a pretty good job keeping students safe but when you think about it there is normally a few thousand students and maybe 100 security guards trying to protect everyone. This setup works pretty good in most cases well but year after year there is a large amount of crimes committed on campus. These include robbery, sexual assault, and harassment just to name a few. Chances of something happening to you kid may be small but there is still a risk .

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to scare all you parents out there. The point of this article is to ensure you know how to keep them safe while they are off at school . If you have read anything else I have written you know I am gung ho when it comes to best stun gun self defense products . When you are using either pepper spray or a stun gun there is the chance that it can be taken away and used against you. I’m not saying they are a bad way to protect yourself they are just a bit riskier . If you want to get a cheap and effective safety solution for you child this is the perfect product for you .

The next up for self defense choices is Stun Guns . More than likely you have seen some other things I have put out about pepper spray . I won’t lie; I’m kind of a nut when it comes to the stuff. It is very versatile and comes in an ocean of different shapes, sizes, and potency. You can choose almost any type and get some great results .

There are also a few myths about pepper spray that I would like to shed some light on . A lot of people believe that pepper spray is dangerous chemically engineered substance that poses a lot of risks to anyone it is used on. They could not be further from the truth . To put it simply, pepper spray at its base is an extract of red pepper that is highly purified. It can pose a danger to an individual that has respiratory issue or if used in extremely large amounts but most of the time it is perfectly safe.

It only takes a short 1-3 second burst to bring an attack to the ground . If your child finds themselves in a situation with an aggressive attacker all they have to do is push down on the top of the bottle and they will gain the upper hand. The best part is the attacker will be disable for up to 10 minutes giving your child time to find help .

I personally feel pepper spray is the best option for anyone who is in college. The many different types makes it perfect to take with you everywhere . Your child can use a small best pepper spray to keep on their key ring. To top off their protection they could use a larger bottle to keep in their vehicle , purse, or pocket . There are also several different types including bottles that look like pagers, tubes of lipstick, or even walking weights. There are plenty of choice so rest assured you kind fine the perfect solution for your child .

Both of these self defense products are very effective and both carry their advantages and disadvantages. So if you have a child that is going off to college this year do the right thing and keep them safe . It will make you feel much better about the safety of your child and I’m sure they will as well.

Do not fall into the common trap of submitting the same resume for every different job you apply to- customize your resume for each individual job and it will pay off later. Try to put yourself in the recruiters shoes and ask “what experience and skills would be a good fit for this position”, and then tailor your resume to include very brief, very specific, positive information about those two things.

Contact info (full name, address, apt. #, city, state, zip, telephone numbers (home and cell) and email address)

A statement of your employment objective

The specific job you are interested in, such as “an entry-level marketing position”

A summary of why you are qualified to do the job

Work History- list jobs by skill set or date

Your Education

Any special training, education or certifications that apply to the job you are attempting to get

Any Military Experience (what branch, what rank, how discharged, and date of separation

A list of special abilities or skills

A statement that indicates the availability of references on request.

So what the heck is environmental science, anyway? What do people that work environmental engineering jobs do all day? It sure does seem like a very broad term, so lets start our discussion of jobs with a definition. Environmental science is at its most basic level, the interaction of the chemical, physical, and biological aspects of the world around us.

Practitioners of environmental science fill many roles, ranging from monitoring the quality of the environment, to tracking humanities impact on the environment, and where necessary, develop plans to repair and restore damaged local ecosystems. They also apply their knowledge to building planning, transportation infrastructure and water utilities. Tangential fields to environmental science include economics, law, and the social sciences.

Environmental science is used to address a multitude of issues such as waste management, use and distribution of natural resources, water quality, climate change, and conservation. Of course, people have been studying the environment for a very long time, but environmental science didnt really “come into its own” as a field of study until the 1960s, mostly in response to new environmental laws and a growing awareness among the public of the need to address environmental issues. See? Lots of opportunity for environmental jobs!
The outlook for jobs in the environmental sciences is good- as problems seem to grow exponentially; there will be an ever-increasing need for individuals trained in environmental sciences. Most of these individuals will work for the government, but there is expected continued growth for environmental science professionals in the private sector, too. Total growth in the field is projected at 25% between 2006 and 2016- this is way ahead of the curve for all other occupations.

Some sub-disciplines within environmental sciences include:

Ecology- analyzes the dynamics between interrelated populations or between a specific population and its environment- addresses issues such as endangered species, over predation or proliferation of a species, environmental contaminants, or an analysis of the projected impact of a building project on a local species.

Environmental Chemistry studies the impact of chemical alterations to the natural environment, specifically, soil and water pollution.

Environmental Biology – focuses specifically on the effects of the environment on biological organisms. This branch includes aspects of geochemistry and ecology, and focuses mainly on individual organisms.

Environmental Pollution- the study of well, pollution! Air, water, noise and soil pollution, their sources, impacts on organisms and management are the main areas of study.

Its important not to confuse Environmental Science with Ecology, even though there is a lot of overlap, as both fields are multidisciplinary. Ecology is ONLY the study of the interrelationship between living organisms, or that between an organism and its environment. Environmental Science, however, includes such diverse concepts as geology, meteorology, water and soil chemistry, modeling- in short; its a much broader field.

Any color in existence has three qualities that completely determine the color:

1) Hue

2) Value

3) Intensity

We will now precisely explain what each quality means.

Hue - The hue of a color is simply the name of the color. For example, yellow, red, green-yellow, etc.

Artists often talk about the temperature of a color or a painting. Temperature is really an element of hue. The warms colors are the yellows and the reds while the cool colors are the greens and the blues.

However, temperature is a relative term. For example although two different blues are both cool colors, one blue can be warmer than another blue.

For example French Ultramarine Blue leans towards the violet while Phthalo Blue leans towards green. Therefore French Ultramarine Blue is a warmer blue than Phthalo Blue although both blues are cool.

Value - Value refers to the lightness or darkness of the color. If you squint you will see that, for example, that yellow is lighter than blue. The value of a color is actually the most important property of a color in relation to painting.

Intensity - Intensity of a color refers to its brightness or dullness. The more saturated or the purer a color is the more intense it is. A color coming straight out of the tube is in its most intense state. Any mixture will dull the tube color and therefore make it less intense. It is however possible to make most mixtures more intense by adding a touch of one color or another.

Now, if you can nail down the hue, the value, and the intensity of a color you will have reproduced that color. Based on this observation we can outline a mental procedure to guide us with the mixing of colors.

Observe - First you observe the color. For example, is it a certain blue or is it red?

Select - Then you select the color on your palette that resembles the observed color the best.

Analyze - Of course, as you would expect, the pure tube color on your palette will rarely match the color you observed. Therefore, we now must identify how the two colors differ from each other. In this, we need to concentrate on three things: hue, value, and intensity. Does the color need to be adjusted in terms of hue? For example, does the observed blue lean more towards the violet or towards the green? Does the value need to be adjusted? For example, does this blue need to be darkened or lightened?

Finally, does the intensity of the color need to be adjusted? For example, does the blue need to be brighter or duller? One, two, or all three of these qualities may need adjustment.

In the beginning you will make many mistakes and the going will be slow. It is generally hard to judge the three qualities of a color and it takes practice. This is particularly the case with judging values and intensities. Nevertheless, you need to practice this procedure every day and over and over again. However, one day it will become second nature just like riding a bicycle. Also, in the beginning don’t be too fussy but try over time to become better and better at it.
