Helpful Strategies for an Impressive Job Interview

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Submitting a great resume for a career opportunity posting is only the first step in landing your ideal position. The interview becomes the next high priority.

On paper, many people appear qualified, but it is what you communicate during the interview that will make or break your chances of receiving an offer.

Distinguishing Yourself

The interview is the step that can set you apart from the other applicants – for better or for worse. Hiring personnel make their decisions based largely on how you answer their questions, how you look, and how you conduct yourself.

This is where it pays to be well informed on what you should do and, just as importantly, what you should not do during the interview process.

Initial Impressions are Critical

You must make a great first impression. That means dressing appropriately in a suit and tie for men, or a pantsuit or skirt and blouse for a woman.

Even if you are applying for an entry level position, you should dress in a business-like fashion that portrays confidence and business sense.

How You Present Yourself

You also want to walk in with confidence, and shake hands immediately with all present, using a firm grip. A first impression is something that your future employers will remember long after they have met with many candidates.

Next, “wow” them with your research of the company. Always come to the discussion knowing the basics of what the company does, how long they have been in business, their top executive, and what the job you are applying for entails.

That prior knowledge will help you to articulate what you can do for the business in the role for which you have applied. It may also impress the person conducting the interview when you bring up a company related topic with which not many people are familiar.

However do so subtlety and only when the opportunity is presented. Forcing such knowledge into the conversation comes across as phoney.

Talking with Your Body

Another tip to have a great job interview is to be cautious about your body language. As with almost any relationship, it can be more important how you say something than what you actually say.

If you are slumped down in your chair and not enthusiastically showing your interest, then no matter what you say could be perceived as disinterest in the job.

That is why you need to sit up straight, keep good eye contact, smile routinely, and allow your body language to communicate your honesty, enthusiasm and openness.

Self-Confidence

Finally, portray your confidence level. Answer questions with a purpose and don’t hem or haw during the interview. Even if you do not know the answer, just say so instead of making something up or elaborating on something that is not asked.

Your answers should get to the point while simultaneously providing some level of detail. Confidence often reflects competence, and that is a trait all employers desire.

Scheduling Reading Time

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Once you have your classroom library set up and ready for check-out of books, you are ready to work on your reading schedule. The main point is that you must establish an independent reading block every day. Ideally it would be at the same time every day, for a minimum of 30 minutes. Go to reading skill for more information.

A 45 minute or even 60 minute block is optimum for achieving the highest gains with your students’ comprehension and interest levels. One word of caution here, do not break up the time into 15 minutes here, 20 there, etc. Your reading block must be one uninterrupted span of time, and it must be done at school. Do not assign as homework a certain amount of reading time at home. It will not be monitored, and will not be done by those who need it most.

If you are teaming with other teachers, see if they are willing to give a portion of their day in a rotational schedule in order to meet this goal without having to worry about sacrificing all of the time from your classes. For example, you and another teacher could set up a rotational schedule where you both rotate daily, giving up one hour of your subject area instruction so that your students could have that reading block of time. Otherwise, if you are self-contained, or solely teach reading, then you should be able to find the time each day.

Next, establish procedures that students are to follow during this reading time. Once students get into a routine, which takes about 2 weeks, things will flow very smoothly and you will rarely have to remind them of the procedures. For instance, each student should have a reading log. Since there is no assigned reading done at home, the reading logs do not go home.

Once the student has his log, he will fill in the appropriate information, leave the log open on the desk so you can come around and check it, and then begin reading. Logs are again filled out at the end of reading time and then collected for storage until the next day. Refer to writing skills for more information.

To assist students in getting into this routine, on random days, once students have had time to fill out their logs, do a quick sweep through their desks, dropping a piece of candy on those students’ desks who have followed the correct procedure. Other helpful procedures are to have a rotational reading center or comfort zone where each day certain students may sit in a designated area with pillows or on the floor.

No talking is a must as well during this time. When students are done reading a book, they will need to complete a form of assessment before selecting a new book. Finally, in your schedule, know that there will be days when something else comes up and the reading time does have to be cut. On those days, make every effort to find a later chunk of time in the day, even if its not the full amount of time, to allow the students to read.

If that’s not possible, add an extra 10 minutes or so onto the following days reading time to help make it up. Remember, you must provide the time to allow the students to have time to achieve the goals you will be setting for them. Visit reading and writing skills for further information.

Spanish Dictionary

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Many people who studied Spanish in high school remember having a Spanish dictionary as part of the required books. Like all things this has now improved. Today anyone can translate back and forth from English to Spanish.

Spanish Dictionary

One Spanish dictionary is hosted by Google. It includes over a dozen languages. One of them is Spanish. It translates any length of text. These translations aren’t exact, but they’re pretty good.

Babelfish and later Alta Vista provided the first translator on the Web. A Spanish dictionary was included. It can translate many languages to and from Spanish. One issue this site has is that translations brought back to the original language have changed. Some people found this a useful feature. It could be used to generate alternate versions of sentences or paragraphs. But it also seemed to mean that the translations weren’t very accurate.

The Spanish dictionary found at Google isn’t like this. If a phrase is translated from English to Spanish and then back from that Spanish to English it’s usually identical to the original phrase. This is better for the purpose of translation even though the re-write capability isn’t present.

There is another Spanish dictionary that isn’t a translator. Oxford’s Spanish dictionary translates, but also offers pronunciation keys and definitions of English and Spanish words. One word to try is water. Agua is the Spanish word. It’s a feminine noun but becomes masculine when it’s singular. The Oxford entry continues by showing many different forms for the Spanish word for water. It’s very detailed.

Looking up mother in the Spanish dictionary brings us the Spanish madre. It also brings up a transitive verb version mimar. Transitive is like the word used in the sentence: she mothers me. Langua materna is Spanish for mother tongue.

Jacket can be found in the Spanish dictionary. If worn it’s chaqueta. But the jacket covering a book is sobrecubierta.

Spanish Dictionary

It seems that when it comes to a Spanish dictionary, Oxford’s is the best and most useful.

Websters Dictionary

Monday, April 27th, 2009

In 1806 a man named Noah Webster published Websters dictionary. His work became so widely used that people began referring to all dictionaries as Websters dictionary.

Websters Dictionary

Websters dictionary was the brain child of Noah, as stated – he was born on 1758 in Connecticut. His family had lived there since colonial times. His dad farmed. John Webster, Connecticut’s former governor, was one of his ancestors. Noah’s mother could trace her roots back to the governor of Plymouth colony.

At the age of 16 Noah began studies at Yale. The American Revolution was in full swing at the time. He served in the Connecticut militia which could have gotten him killed, thus stopping Websters dictionary before it had ever been started.

When he was 20 Webster wanted to earn a law degree. Like many people he took up teaching to earn money for school. But once he became a lawyer he realized it wasn’t for him. He once again became a teacher. He set up small schools that didn’t do well.

In 1789 he marred a fairly prominent woman. He walked in high social circles but didn’t have much money. He borrowed $1500 from Alexander Hamilton so that he could move to New York City to start a newspaper. He began to publish. This was the real start for Websters dictionary. He wrote a great deal and he published text books. He also became a state senator in 1798.

He realized the conditions in the schools were poor. Students of different ages were packed into overcrowded rooms. Teachers had little training. They taught without much in the way of books or other materials. Webster decided to create American books to teach American children. So he created a speller, a grammar book and a reader. His goal was to rescue American English from what he called the pedantry of English grammar and pronunciation. He believed that the people, not archaic languages like a Latin and Greek, should control the language.

It was this work that led him to the eventual creation of the first Websters dictionary. Over time that original work was revised. And when Webster died the Merriam brothers purchased the rights to his name and his work. Today most dictionaries use the term Webster because it’s so well known.

Now you know the history of Websters dictionary.

Medical Dictionary

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Medical professionals often find a medical dictionary to be very useful. This book covers medicine thoroughly. Most of these dictionaries have a glossary so that terms can easily be found. Internet versions are even faster to search.

Medical Dictionary

Average people need a medical dictionary. That is, something aimed at the regular person. A number of popular websites have been developed along these lines. They allow people to look up conditions by symptom. Dizziness and fever would return flu.

But be careful when looking in this type of medical dictionary. Diagnosing a condition takes a lot of knowledge and practice. One set of symptoms could indicate hundreds of conditions. Mistakes are common. For example someone may think that a pain in the chest is a heart attack. But a chest pain could be caused by indigestion, too. Always consult a doctor if experiencing chest pains.

Incorrect conclusions drawn from this type of medical dictionary could lead people to panic. People also start questioning their doctors. Overall, information is good to have.

A medical dictionary can be used to look up medical terms. People sometimes consult them in addition to seeing a doctor. It was a little bit like the Internet sites before there was an Internet.

A lot of useful information can be found inside a medical dictionary. For example the term headache returns a very straightforward definition – a pain in the head. No kidding! Cancer is an unlimited growth that expands by invading cells. A basic medical dictionary would have these types of descriptions.

For cancer, for example, a more detailed medical dictionary will have a much more detailed results. Cancer is a general term that covers many conditions with many treatments . One of these is a cluster. This is an area in which many people have cancer – more than expected in a certain time frame. A cancer cluster means some cancer causing agent is at work.

Medical Dictionary

A medical dictionary can be good or bad. Use it in addition to interactions with medical professionals.
