A lot of students are surprised when the learn that anyone can take Harvard classes online. Harvard Extension School, a part of Harvard University, offers distance learning courses with an open-enrollment policy. That's right…everyone gets in.

Here's a blurb from my recent review of Harvard Extension School programs:

“Harvard Extension School students can choose from over one hundred online courses taught by Harvard's distinguished faculty. These classes tend to be challenging and require a significant time commitment. The majority of extension school professors are Harvard affiliates, however there are also teachers chosen from other universities and businesses. No special requirements are needed to enroll in the online courses provided through Harvard Extension School; all courses have an open-enrollment policy. Two certificate programs and two academic citations are available completely online.”

Easy Employment with These Online Degrees

There's been a lot of talk about recession lately. But, some degrees are practically guaranteed to be in high demand - no matter what the state of the economy. Yahoo Education recently released a list of eight careers that are expected to grow like crazy. Here's a blurb:

“Do you really want to commit to a 4-year degree? While it can be intimidating to consider investing the time and money required to get a bachelor's degree, choosing the right degree could make it well worth your effort. Information on the following 8 careers is based on current projections by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), whose data indicate that these occupations will experience more growth than any others through 2016. Spend the next four years preparing for one of the following professions, and your job search could be a breeze.”

Included in the list are: computer software engineer, accountant, elementary school teacher, personal financial adviser, computer systems analyst, market research analyst, and others.

Does this mean you should switch majors? Of course not. Life is too short to give up what you love for a little more stability. But, if you were considering pursing one of these online degrees anyway, now may be a good time to go for it.

Where to Earn Legitimate Life Experience Credit

Since yesterday's post about Excelsior College, several readers have asked about other life experience programs. The other two of the “big three” life experience universities are Thomas Edison State College and Charter Oak State College.

These are all legitimate programs with regional accreditation (the most widely accepted form of accreditation).

So, how do you tell a legitimate life experience program from a diploma mill? Look for these tell-tale signs:

1. Legitimate life experience programs are accredited. The best have regional accreditation.

2. Legitimate programs require students to prove their life experience by creating a portfolio of work or taking exams.

3. Legitimate life experience programs do not give credit for an entire degree at once. Instead, students must prove that they have the knowledge or skills required by each class.

4. Legitimate life experience programs require work. Students can't just fill out some paperwork and receive a degree in the mail. Proving their skills and filling the holes in their coursework takes time.

To learn more about these programs, take a look at: 4 Steps to Legitimate Life Experience Credit.

Online High Schools Offer New Options for Teens

19173644.jpg
Traditional schooling isn't the right choice for every teenager. Online classes offer flexibility as well as guidance to teen learners. Many online programs are regionally accredited and can help students prepare for college or the job market. My recently updated About.com article, Get Your High School Diploma Online, explores the options open to high schoolers. Here's a blurb:

“A growing number of teenagers are earning their high school diplomas through the internet…Finding an online high school can be a challenge; many schools make big claims but few live up to their promises. Parents generally have two options for their children: private online schools or public online schools. Private online schools function much like traditional private schools, while public schools must follow national and state regulations.”

Online College Completion for Adult Students

36108483.jpg
Online college is often the best option for adult learners seeking to complete their college degrees. In addition to the scheduling flexibility offered by online schools, students are generally able to earn their degrees faster when studying online.

Many adults already have college credits at more than one school. Several online degree programs will allow these credits to be counted towards a diploma - shaving months or even years off the time required to graduate.

My latest About.com article explains how adult learners can finish their degrees by enrolling in online programs. Here's a blurb:

“You may decide to keep your original major, or you may choose to study something completely different. Keep in mind that if you have a lot of subject-specific transfer credits, choosing a new major may substantially increase the time it takes to earn a degree. Some fast-track college completion programs offer only a limited selection of majors. Generally these majors are in subjects such as “general studies.” A degree in such a generic major may not help you when applying to industries that require training in a specific field. However, most jobs that only require a “bachelors degree,” should accept generic majors with no problem.”

4 Types of Online High Schools

36726141.jpg
Online high schools are becoming more popular for both teenage and adult students. In my latest About.com article, I explain the difference between the four most popular types of online high school programs. Here's a blurb:

“Not all online high schools are created equal. Private programs offer quality at a high price tag. Public online high schools educate students for free but aren't available in all areas. Students can also earn a diploma at no cost from online charter schools. However, these programs are sometimes unreliable and available only to students living in certain cities. Alternatively, university-sponsored online high schools offer nationwide programs but may have more strict admissions policies.”

Check out the article for a more in-depth breakdown of the four types of online high schools.
